The Union started small and over the years, its operations have expanded to 60 Orthodox Communities located in 36 districts Country wide. The Union has successfully implemented three-year strategic plans in the years of 2005-2008, 2009-2011 and 2012-2014 respectively.
Since its inception, the Union has mobilized, empowered and equipped Mothers and communities at different levels with knowledge and practical skills in different fields. This has been through strategies such as Peoples Owned Process (POP), Faith Based Approach, Facilitation and partnering, skills trainings, Advocacy and lobbying, referrals, networking and collaboration.
Despite these efforts, UOCMU has not adequately covered all the communities, the illiteracy levels are still high, some communities’ still experience inadequate food and income security, and Gender Based Violence. Also the negative societal attitude limit the Level of women confidence and assertiveness accompanied by limited paid employment opportunities that restrict women to promote their development agenda. The situation is complicated by unequal property and inheritance rights where customs are allowed to be practiced alongside the statutory law (constitution of Uganda article 237) among others. Therefore, with the more support to be received, our future plan seeks to consolidate and strengthen the past Union’s efforts and scale up her community service delivery hence contributing to improvement of women to lead holistically fulfilled lives in both the Church and the Community.
